American Legion Post 346 nipped; regional Thursday at Bob Warn Field

St. Leon — Wayne Newton Post 346 couldn’t have come much closer to forcing a second game of the championship round of the American Legion baseball state tournament Sunday, but came up just short in a 6-5 loss to Princeton.

Both teams open Great Lakes National Regional play at Bob Warn Field on Thursday, Princeton in the 5 p.m. game and Post 346 meeting Midland, Mich., in the game immediately following that one.

Post 346 had an early lead Sunday and took a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning, when a two-run single by the nephew of former Princeton and Indiana State star Casey Whitten was the big blow in a four-run rally.

Terre Haute tied the game with a rally in the bottom of the eighth, only to give up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Post 346 had a batter hit by a pitch and added three singles, but two runners were thrown out on the bases — one at the plate.

Pete Lannoo was the fifth pitcher for Post 346 to pitch a complete game in five state-finals contests.
