METRO ROUNDUP: Sycamores, Engineers honored

TERRE HAUTE — Racheal Mahan of the Indiana State women’s team and Julian Strickland of the Rose-Hulman men’s team have received basketball Player of the Week honors from their respective conferences, it was announced Monday.

Mahan had 39 points and 17 rebounds as the Sycamores won road games at Evansville and Southern Illinois last week. She was 15 for 27 from the field, 9 for 12 from the foul line and had 11 points in ISU’s 26-0 run that turned the Evansville game around on Thursday.

Mahan and the Sycamores clinched the team’s first winning record in three seasons with Saturday’s win at Southern Illinois, and the Sycamores host Illinois State at 2:05 p.m. Sunday with a chance to move into a tie for third in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Strickland earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors after going 9 for 9 from the field, including four 3-point shots, in a crucial road win for the Engineers at Hanover.

Strickland had 26 points in that game, which secured the HCAC regular-season championship and the home court for the upcoming conference tournament for his team. For the week he averaged 17 points and five rebounds per game.

The Engineers begin conference tournament play at 8 p.m. Saturday against the winner of a game tonight between Franklin and Defiance.

Track

• Sycamore, Engineer each earn national honors — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association sent honors Terre Haute’s way twice on Monday, with ISU’s Felisha Johnson named Division I Women’s National Athlete of the Week and Rose-Hulman’s Tyler Hannan winning Division III Men’s National Athlete of the Week recognition.

Johnson earned her honor with a weight throw of 75-feet-8, the fifth-best mark in collegiate history. Only six women have bettered the 75-foot mark, and Johnson has now done that twice. She also leads all of Division I for the spring season, more than two feet ahead of Clemson’s Brittney Waller.

Hannan won two individual events and was part of two winning relay teams for the Engineers at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. His wins at 200 meters, 400 meters and the 4x200 and 4x400 teams helped Rose win its third straight HCAC title.

Golf

• Sycamores win — At Birmingham, Ala., Indiana State won the Birmingham-Southern Ann Rhoads Invitational by 21 strokes on Monday, finishing ahead of one of the top Division III programs in the nation.

McCall Christopher shot a 77 on Sunday and a 79 on Monday to finish in second place with a 156, while Reece Feducia and Emily Dixon placed third and fourth with scores of 157 and 159.

“There was much more difficult weather today,” coach Greg Towne said. “Emily, McCall and Reece made the all-tournament team. It was kind of scrappy but the women hung in and got it done.”

Other Sycamores included Christina Beyerl, 11th with a 164, and Gina Della Camera, 17th at 167.
