West Vigo plays at Linton tonight

TERRE HAUTE — The action — West Vigo’s Vikings (10-10) travel to Linton tonight to face the Miners (16-3) in a nonconference game that ends West Vigo’s regular season. Linton also hosts Northview on Wednesday. Tonight’s game had originally been scheduled for Friday.

The time — Varsity tipoff is approximately 7:30 p.m.

The airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.

The coaches — Joe Boehler is 64-49 in his fifth season at West Vigo. Joey Hart is 39-25 in his third season at Linton and 185-153 in his 15th season overall.

Probable starting lineups — West Vigo expects to start its five seniors: 6-1 Adrien Corenflos, 6-3 Aaron Kirby, 5-11 Cade Lindsey, 5-7 Kyle Stewart and 6-0 Lance Stonebarger.

For Linton, 6-5 senior Dess Fougerousse and 6-4 senior Jackson Bohnert will be the forwards, 6-8 senior Austin Karazsia the center and 6-2 junior Bryant Jackson and 5-11 senior Keith Fulk the guards.

Key reserves — For West Vigo, 5-9 sophomore Tyler Hayes and 6-0 sophomore Braiden Cardinal. For Linton, 5-9 junior Ryan Woodward, 6-3 junior Zach Riddell, 5-11 junior Beau Eaton and 6-0 freshman Joe Dieball.

Team leaders — Stewart is averaging more than 13 points per game to lead West Vigo. Fougerousse, who became Linton’s all-time leading scorer last week, and Karazsia are both averaging 20.5 points per game for the Miners.

Recent games — West Vigo beat North Central 60-43 on Saturday. Linton lost 53-50 to Clay City last Tuesday, but beat North Central 87-49 on Friday to wrap up the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference title.

Last meeting — Linton won 66-64 last year, West Vigo 60-57 the year before.

Coaches’ quotes — Boehler on the Vikings: “About mid-January we hit a pretty big skid, but the last couple weeks we’ve kind of turned things around. The attitude and the effort has been a lot better; I think we’re going in the right direction.”

Hart on the Miners: “I couldn’t be more pleased. We had a little bit of a setback [against Clay City], but it was a long time coming. Our two mainstays have set 12 school records, and their teammates have bought into their roles.”

Boehler on the Miners: “They’re a ranked team in [Class] 2A. They’re very good. They have two guys scoring 20 points a game and are a difficult matchup for any team in the state. Their size is going to pose a big problem for us. We hope to take care of the ball; play good, solid defense; compete with everything we have; and let the score take care of itself.”

Hart on the Vikings: “Obviously Joe [Boehler] does a great job. The Stewart kid is very dangerous, I love Corenflos and his effort, and Lindsey is a very good driver. They’ll be a good test for us.”

  • Redneck Quaker: A young lady of the outdoors

Where do I start to tell you about this 10-year-old outdoor lady? Let’s start with her own words from a nice letter she wrote.

“My name is Lilly Hutchison and this year when I was nine and again hunting with my Papaw, Mike Burch, we got up way before daylight on opening morning of youth deer season. I was watching a 6-pointer for several minutes until a larger buck appeared and chased him off, but not giving me a shot at him. Papaw and I were preparing a place for our evening hunt when a couple of does came across the field right to us. I carefully placed my shot and she ran around 8 yards. That evening, we decided to go to our neighbors’ woods. On the way in, we saw a large buck watering in one of the few puddles in the creek. Papaw said we would wait nearby to see if he would come back. To our amazement, he did! I was fortunate to take this 10-pointer, 250-pound buck. I have had many great hunts with Papaw.”
