South dominates Bedford North Lawrence to improve to 7-7

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South defeated Bedford North Lawrence 66-45 in high school boys basketball on Saturday at the South goalery.

The victory got the Braves a split in the weekend at 1-1 and even for the season at 7-7 as South lost to Warren Central on Friday.

“We got it put to us pretty tough Friday night. The kids showed some resiliency to come back. We had a good shootaround today and did everything we asked,” said South coach Scott Ridge after the contest.

The teams were tied three times in the first period before Jeffrey Turner’s 3-pointer gave the Braves a 14-11 lead at the first stop.

The second period was even again. Both teams talllied 12 points and the host team was up 26-23 at halftime.

BNL scored first in the third canto but South used a 7-0 run to assume a 33-25 advantage and the Braves took a 41-33 lead into the final eight minutes.

BNL again scored the first two points of the final quarter but South ran off the next 18 and it was 59-35 with less than four minutes to play.

BNL went to the free-throw line six times in the final minutes after not shooting its free toss until the third period to add to its totals.

“We have to keep teams off the line,” said Ridge.

South had a 23-18 edge in field goals and hit 10 treys compared to one for the Stars.

Kevaris Gregory and Turner each had 21 points for the winners. Gregory was 6 of 9 from 3-point range and Turner pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for another double-double.

“Kevaris is one of the best shooters around,” said Ridge.

Trey Turner and Blaze Byrer each had 10 points for BNL, now 4-6 for the season.

The Braves have a week to get ready for their next game after playing three times this week, beginning the week by winning the consolation championship of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic.

South hits the road to play Northview and Guerin Classic.

“Northview played everybody tough in the Classic. Guerin Catholic is coming off a state championship,” said Ridge.
