TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute Wayne Newton Post 346 bounced back from a disappointing performance Wednesday night with a strong game Thursday night against visiting Washington Post 121 in American Legion baseball.

Austin Hicks pitched a three-hit shutout for six innings and Wayne Newton put eight hits together with five Washington errors for a 10-0 victory at Terre Haute North High School.

Wayne Newton (26-8) split a doubleheader at Mattoon, Ill., Wednesday and was not happy with its performance. Wayne Newton jumped on Washington (5-12) in the first inning for six runs on four hits and two Washington errors.

Coach John Hayes said Wayne Newton was more focused.

“That’s what you have to be in every game, not just once in a while.”

Zach Milam, Cody Thornton, Jacob Johnson and Connor Pierce each connected for a base hit in the first inning and Washington’s starting pitcher Connor Swartzentruber hit back-to-bat batters and walked one.

“Washington struggled a little bit, but our kids hit the ball hard. You hit the ball hard and good things are going to happen,” Hayes said of Wayne Newton’s hitting.

Giving Hicks (6-2) a 6-0 cushion was like turning out the lights on Washington. While he relied primarily on his fastball, Hicks threw everything for strikes while giving up just hits.

“It just felt good in the bullpen and carried it out to the mound. I didn’t really throw a lot of breaking pitches, it was mainly my fastball,” Hicks said.

“[Hicks] was throwing all of his pitches for strikes and when you can do that you’re going to be hard to beat,” Hayes said.

And with a 10-0 lead, Hayes decided to find out of Lane Dransfield was ready to return to the mound. The lefthander faced threw batters in the seventh inning and ended the game with two infield grounds balls and a strike out.

Wayne Newton will play a doubleheader at home Sunday against Princeton at 1 p.m.
