SPRINGFIELD, Ill. —
Not many teams have lost to the Springfield Sliders in 2013, but the Terre Haute Rex felt the rare of sting of defeat against the Sliders.
Springfield — 4-28 entering its Sunday doubleheader against the Rex — toppled Terre Haute 4-2 in the doubleheader opener.
The loss prevented the Rex from making up any ground against Danville and Quincy — the two West Division teams that currently sit in the two playoff spots. At press time, Terre Haute was 41⁄2 games behind both teams.
After the Rex (19-16) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, Springfield answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Springfield’s runs were scored against Rex starter Kurt Kudrecki — an Indiana State pitcher — as he took the loss.
The Sliders (5-28) added a run in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Cody Gardner and Izaak Silva accounted for Terre Haute’s RBI in the contest.
The second game of the doubleheader concluded after the Tribune-Star’s press time.
The Rex return home to play Hannibal tonight.
