METRO ROUNDUP: South duo earns all-state tennis honors

Terre Haute South’s No. 1 doubles team of Miranda Camp and Nicole Howe has been named to the all-state second team by the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association, it was announced Monday.

Camp and Howe finished in the top eight of the state individual doubles championships on Saturday, winning one match and then losing to the eventual state runner-up team from Park Tudor. It was the second straight trip to the finals for the two players.

Also honored by the IHSTCA were South’s Lauren Hambrock and Terre Haute North’s Anna Potter. Both are honorable-mention singles all-state players.

Track

• Michl breaks coach’s record — At Indianapolis, Indiana State senior Leeann Michl realized a two-year goal Saturday night when she ran a school-record time in the 800-meter run at the American Milers Club series at IUPUI.

ISU women’s coach Angela Martin had the previous record of 2:06.05 since 2000, but figured it wouldn’t last throughout Michl’s career. “I was her biggest cheerleader,” Martin said. “I am very proud of her hard work.”

Michl’s previous best had been 2:06.28 at the 2012 Auburn Tiger Track Classic, but Saturday she finished in 2:05.57. That time also made the “B” standard for the upcoming USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.

Golf

• Three in four days — At Mark’s Par Three, Tom Daugherty of Terre Haute got his third career hole-in-one on Monday, using a 9-iron to ace the 102-yard 12th hole.

His sons, Grant Daugherty and Chance Daugherty, plus Andrew Fisher were the witnesses for the shot, the third hole-in-one at the course since Friday.

Friday’s shot was accomplished by Matt Vidal, also using a 9-iron, on the 105-yard eighth hole.

It was Vidal’s first ace and was witnessed by Chris Doti and Devan Allen.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.

  • LeBron James says he’s returning to Cavaliers

LeBron James is going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James told Sports Illustrated Friday that he’s decided to go home. It’s a move that would have seemed unfathomable four years ago, after the venomous fallout that followed his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat.
