TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex rallied from a three-run deficit Wednesday for a one-run victory that evens their record at 24-24 in the Prospect League season.

The Rex took advantage of the bullpen woes of the Hannibal Cavemen for a 4-3 victory before 1,139 fans at Bob Warn Field.

Starting the night eight games out of second place in the West Division, the Rex are unlikely to make the playoffs but they can have a winning record. The Rex have seven games remaining, four at home.

Rex starter John Robert Patterson and his Cavemen counterpart Josh Tols were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through five innings.

The Cavemen got to Patterson in the sixth and took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by J. Golden and Jake Mangler, followed by a walk and Rex error. Hannibal made it 3-0 with a single run in the seventh.

The Rex never did figure out Tols, who struck out 10, walked three and scattered four hits in seven innings. But as soon as Tols was replaced in the eighth, Terre Haute took full advantage.

Owen Conway received a leadoff walk and pinch-hitter Andrew Cope doubled down the right-field line. Kyle Kempf followed with a run-scoring single to right field and Cope came home on a wild pitch, getting the Rex within one run, 3-2.

Tyler Wampler, who doubled into the left-center field gap for the Rex’s first hit of the game in the fourth inning, was walked. A sacrifice bunt by Brian Wolfe moved Kempf and Wampler to second and third.

With two out, Cody Gardner was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for pinch-hitter Atlee Schwab, and Schwab was hit by a pitch, bringing in Kempf with the tying run. Nick Johnson was then also hit by a pitch, sending Wampler home.

Wampler had a double and single to lead the Rex six-hit attack.

Brandyn Hall earned his first win for the Rex with 2 1/3 innings of relief and Kurt Kudrecki picked up his third save of the season.
