Terre Haute 12s dominant at Little League state tourney

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North’s 12-year-olds opened Little League baseball state-finals play in dominant fashion Saturday, downing Indiana Central 14-3 in four innings.

North hit three homers in the game, including a three-run walkoff shot by Braden Edington in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Also going deep for the Terre Haute team were Ryne Hoopingarner and winning pitcher Nathan Foxworthy, while Kyler Hudson and Cayman Hayes combined to go 5 for 5.

Next game for North is 3:15 p.m. today against Eagle Creek, a second straight opponent from the Indianapolis area.

Highlights — For North, winning pitcher Nathan Foxworthy and Braden Edington each had a double and homer; Kyler Hudson was 3 for 3; Cayman Hayes was 2 for 2 with a double; and Ryne Hoopingarner homered in his only trip to the plate.

Next — North plays Eagle Creek at 3:15 p.m. today.

In other baseball:

* Legion sectional postponed — At Terre Haute North, rained wiped out the American Legion sectional hosted by Wayne Newton Post 346.

Play resumes today at Don Jennings Field with the host team playing Clinton at 1 p.m., winner going to the championship game that’s now scheduled at 5 p.m. Monday.

Sullivan and Washington play today’s second game at approximately 4:30, with the winner of that game playing the loser of the 1 p.m. game at approximately 8 p.m.

A second game in the championship round, if necessary, would immediately follow the 5 p.m. contest.

* Junior team still alive — At Kokomo, the Wayne Newton Post 346 junior American Legion team stayed alive in regional play Saturday and plays the host team in the championship round at 1 p.m. today.

* Post 346 14, Bristol 0, 5 innings — On Friday, Chase Jones hit a grand-slam homer, Jacob Schlosser had a double and three RBIs and Brandon Taylor had a hit and four RBIs for Terre Haute. Damon Bass and Dakoda Watson combined for a one-hitter, Bass striking out seven.

  • Rex fall to Miners 4-3 in 11 innings, forcing them into tie with Quincy for first place

    The West Virginia Miners tallied the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field, then held Terre Haute scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to post a 4-3 baseball victory and shove the Rex into a virtual tie for first place with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings.
    Terre Haute is now 18-8 in the second half, while Quincy is 19-9.

    The scamble will begin at 1 p.m., with lunch being served at noon. This year’s tournament chairperson is Dave Piker, a current board member for the VCEF.
    There will be 36 teams comprised of business people and community members as well as teachers, principals and administrators from the Vigo County School Corp.
