TERRE HAUTE — Four-year Rose-Hulman varsity letterwinner Derek Eitel of Marshall, Ill., closed the first half of the Class AA baseball season with nine consecutive hitless relief appearances in the last month.
Eitel has not allowed a hit in his last 121Ú3 innings of work over nine appearances for the Mobile Baybears in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Eitel has walked three and struck out 16 over the nine hitless appearances. He has not allowed a hit out of the bullpen since June 14.
His efforts helped Mobile claim the first-half division title this year for a squad that won the 2011 and 2012 Class AA Southern League championship.
For the season, Eitel stands 4-1 with a 3.43 earned-run average and 39 strikeouts in 44.2 innings of work. He has held the opposition to just a .179 batting average this season.
Eitel was selected in the 17th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks and began his minor-league pitching career in Rookie League Missoula and Class A South Bend.
In 2011, Eitel pitched with the Visalia Rawhide in the Class A California League, in addition to making two starts for Class AAA Reno. Last summer, he recorded an 8-11 record and a 4.37 ERA in 25 starts for Mobile.
Eitel’s career minor-league statistics include 24 wins and 292 strikeouts in 392.0 innings of work. He has made 95 career appearances and 58 starts within the Diamondbacks organization.
At Rose, Eitel established school records for innings pitched (320.1) and wins (29). Eitel ranks second in school history with 299 career strikeouts and is third in school history with 92 strikeouts in 2010.
Eitel helped Rose-Hulman reach the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
