MARTINSVILLE, Ill. —
Carl Dodd and the Holsapples were big winners in thoroughbred horse racing Friday at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair.
Dodd rode three of the six winners on the card, while either Bonnie or Stacey Holsapple of Greenup, Ill., are owners of four of the winners.
Euritas Gold, owned by Stacey Holsapple and ridden by Cat Dergits, won the first leg of the National Road Derby for the second straight year and can claim a bonus by winning at Marshall and Greenup later in the summer.
The Derby is run in memory of Dale Baird, the winningest thoroughbred trainer of all time with 9,445 victories. The native of Martinville died in 2007.
Schwarzkoph, owned by Bonnie Holsapple and ridden by Dodd, was another winner for the second straight year at the track.
Friday’s program also included pony and mule races and followed two days of harness racing at the fair.
