Tom Reck: Get ready for busy sports week in area

TERRE HAUTE — It’s another busy week for sports fans and teams in the area.

Big Four action is slated for Terre Haute North and South, West Vigo and Northview teams.

West Vigo and North Central met in softball and Rockville and North vied on the baseball diamond in big games to open the week on Monday.

The schedule for all prep teams is full with everyone trying to make up games before postseason competition. Pairings will be announced for Illinois baseball and softball tournaments this week.

The month of May begins earlier than recent years at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Saturday’s running of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the road course. Qualifying is Friday for the event and qualifying for the Indy 500 will be May 17-18.

Regular racing is set for Bloomington Speedway on Friday and Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday.

Indiana State’s baseball team resumes play after a break for finals and continues its bid for a top seed in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament with a weekend series against Missouri State. ISU will be host team for the conference tournament.

The ISU softball team has concluded a winning season and just missed qualifying for the MVC tournament.

Golfers concluded play in a two-man scramble Sunday at Geneva Hills. Tom Jones and Chris Keen won their second straight tournament. A two-player event is slated for Saturday at Idle Creek.

There may be other events on the schedule but you get the idea.

n Scholarships given — The Indiana Football Hall of Fame has announced winners of scholarships for each of the football classes.

Austin Kutch of North Central is the winner in Class A. He earned four letters and played on the line for the Thunderbirds.

He earned numerous honors including being named to the Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association academic honor team and was ranked fifth in his class.

He will attend Franklin College and play football.

Isaac Harker of Lebanon earned the honor in Class 4A.

He earned three letters for his play at quarterback and punter. Among his honors was being named to the Indianapolis Colts Academic All-State Team.

He will be a preferred walk-on at Indiana State.

n Tom-Cattin’ It — Kellen Norris has been named an assistant athletic trainer for the Indianapolis Colts.

He is a Casey-Westfield High School and ISU graduate and was on the ISU training staff last year.

n The Indiana High School Athletic Association had scheduled a vote on a proposal to have three classes in most sports instead of four but tabled the proposal for further study.

The board also voted to move the girls and boys state golf finals to Prairie View starting next season.

n Chet Jastremski was an All-American in swimming at Indiana University and medaled in the Olympics. He died at the age of 73.

n The Big Ten and Big East will begin a new series in basketball beginning in the 2015-16 season.

In the Big Ten-Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge for men’s teams next year, Indiana will meet Pittsburgh, Purdue plays North Carolina State, Michigan State faces Notre Dame and Illinois takes on Miami.

n Indiana swept Purdue in weekend baseball to up its record to 32-12 and Big Ten mark to 16-2, winning 20 of its last 22 games.

n The Hall of Fame Cup will be played in June at Hulman Links and Geneva Hills, pitting players from the Wabash Valley against players from Vigo County.

n Lance Marshall, the baseball coach at Franklin College, got his 400th victory when Franklin defeated Bluffton 10-1.

n The University of Indianapolis women’s golf team is host team for an NCAA Super Regional this week at the Purgatory Golf Club. Terre Haute native Ken Piepenbrink is coach of the U of Indy team.
