Metro roundup: ISU’s Wampler makes national watch list

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s Tyler Wampler has been named to the watch list for the 2014 Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year award.

The senior from West Vigo is one of two Missouri Valley Conference shortstops on the list and is currently batting .287 with a .979 fielding percentage in 41 games this season.

The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas.

Among other nominees are Michael Russell of North Carolina, whose .388 batting average is best on the list and who has 12 doubles, a triple and three homers; Kyle Holder of San Diego, with a .988 fielding percentage in 35 games; and Tim Proudfoot of Texas Tech, who hasn’t made an error this season but has played just 21 games because of an injury.

Indiana State has finals this week and is idle until a May 7 game at Ball State.

It’s the third weekly award for Heibel this season, although the other two were Pitcher of the Week Awards.

Last week the junior was 13 for 21 at the plate with five doubles, a homer, seven RBI, five runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage. For the season she’s batting .330 and leading the Engineers with 10 doubles and five homers. She is Rose-Hulman’s career leader in homers with 14, ranks third with 32 career doubles, has the fourth-ranked career batting average (.373) and is sixth all-time with 131 hits and 63 RBI.

As a pitcher this spring she is 11-4, ranking second in the conference with a 1.83 earned run average.

The Engineers are seeded third for the HCAC tournament later this week and play Bluffton at 10 a.m. Friday in the double-elimination affair. Rose, 18-14, is in postseason play for the first time since 2008.
