Sullivan third, South fourth in Bob Arnett Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — Indianapolis North Central has been a regular in the Terre Haute South Braves/Bob Arnett Invitational for boys high school golf teams played at Rea Park.

The Panthers shot 306 on Saturday and went home with the team trophy, outscoring 15 teams in the event played in sunny, warm and sometimes windy conditions.

“We are an experienced team and have had some good numbers in trials and tryouts [but] we have been up and down. It’s the first time in six years that we have won. … I was pleased with the consistency. We had four players shoot in the 70s,” said coach Leo Hodes.

Jackson Juerlong and Jack Geshay each had 75 for the winners. Ari Gerstein and Nick Stewart each had 78.

Greencastle shot 313 to take second, edging Vincennes Rivet with 314.  Rounding out the top eight were Sullivan 316, South 318, Brownsburg 322, Terre Haute North 329 and Northview 330.

Brownsburg is currently ranked 14th in the state, Sullivan 19th.

Brownsburg sophomore Luke Kelly was medalist with a 1-under-par 71. Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan and Alec Davis of Greencastle were next with 72s while Adam LaGrange of North and Luke Brotherton of Greencastle each had 73s to round out the top five.

Drew Cahill paced the host team with 75 and Keegan Roembke had 77 to lead Northview.

Kelly went 33-38 for his 71 and took medalist honors in a tournament for the second week in a row. He also was low in the Danville Invitational with 73.

The 71 was his best score of the year. He had six birdies and five bogeys. “The greens were tough. You had to keep it below the hole,” Kelly said.

Pirtle was second low medalist for the second week in a row after notching medalist honors in the Northview Invitational. He had four birdies. “I hit the ball well off the tee. I couldn’t get anything going,” he said.

Davis had a chance to tie for medalist honors but 3-putted No. 18. He had a birdie and an eagle on No. 16 and Brotherton had an eagle on No. 18.

LaGrange was 36-37 in shooting 73. “I had nine pars in a row and had a couple birdies on the back,” said the North senior, who said he has decided to attend Embry-Riddle Areronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., and play golf.
