Prep roundup: Bennett, Edwards boost W.Vigo baseball

TERRE HAUTE — Derrick Bennett went 2 for 4 and clouted a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Zach Edwards chalked up his first varsity pitching victory and also went 2 for 4 to help West Vigo defeat visiting Paris, Ill., 11-5 in high school baseball Wednesday evening.

Hunter Morris homered for Paris.

Highlights — For West Vigo, Derrick Bennett went 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer in the 6th inning and 3 RBIs; winning pitcher Zach Edwards went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs; Dacoda Watson went 2 for 2 with 2 runs; Brandin Behringer had a double and 3 RBIs; and Davie Inman contributed a double and 3 runs. For Paris, Hunter Morris went 2 for 3 with a homer, Ryan Coffman went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and Bo Kelly added a double.

Next — West Vigo (4-2) will play host to Cloverdale today, with the varsity contest starting at 5:30 p.m.

• Eels win 10th — At Clay City, the host team defeated Riverton Parke 3-0.

The Eels improved to 10-2, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Raven Allender picked up the mound victory.

Clay City will be at Terre Haute North today. Game time is 5 p.m.

    The Terre Haute Rex rank second among the 12 Prospect League baseball teams in extra-base hits and Zach Welz, Kaden Moore and Tony Rosselli added to the Rex 2014 haul at Bob Warn Field in a 3-1 win over Springfield on Thursday.
    Kaden Moore put up the Rex’s first run with a line-drive home run over the left-field wall in the second inning. Welz added his homer in the seventh — with a no-doubt blast to left to add an insurance run.

    So just who is Jack Mewhort?
    Well, the Indianapolis Colts rookie is slated to take over as the team’s new starting left guard due to the season-ending quad injury suffered Wednesday by veteran Donald Thomas.
     A former standout at Ohio State, the 6-foot-6, 308-pound Mewhort was selected by the Colts in the second round of this spring’s NFL draft. And since Indianapolis didn’t have a first-round pick, the Toledo, Ohio, native is getting a lot more scrutiny that most second-rounders taken in the draft.

  • Rex fall to Miners 4-3 in 11 innings, forcing them into tie with Quincy for first place

    The West Virginia Miners tallied the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field, then held Terre Haute scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to post a 4-3 baseball victory and shove the Rex into a virtual tie for first place with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings.
    Terre Haute is now 18-8 in the second half, while Quincy is 19-9.
