Busy Patriots get past Casey 7-1 in prep softball

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North began a busy week of high school softball Tuesday, defeating Casey 7-1 at North.

The Patriots now are 6-3 and will take on Clay City, ranked second in the Class A poll, on Thursday in another home game.

They will play host to potential sectional rival Mooresville on Friday and wind up the week with Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference games against Warren Central and Lawrence North on Saturday at Warren Central.

North coach Jack Kirchner used three pitchers against the Warriors with Valerie Lewis going the first three innings followed by Lorrie LaTourette and Kelsey Young each going two innings.

They limited the Warriors to six hits, none in the last three innings as Young did not allow a base runner in her two innings of work.

Lexie Black went the distance for the Warriors, now 9-9 for the season. They met Cumberland on Monday and will play at Red Hill on Thursday.

“We have prom this weekend. You won’t win many games not making the plays in the field,” said coach Mike Cutright about Tuesday.

He has only two seniors on his roster and Sarah Kuhn was the only one in the lineup on Tuesday.

The Patriots scored their runs in the second, third and fourth frames, banging out 14 hits — five in the fifth when they scored four times.

“We’re making the plays now. We’ve been hitting all year long,” said Kirchner.

Jessica Will, Maggie Lubbehusen, Makayla Irish and Lewis each had two hits in the contest. Katie Herrick had a double and Lubbehusen tripled, while Will and Sierra Sykes each drove in two runs.

Brigette Belt and Saidee Brandenburg each had two hits for the Warriors.
