TERRE HAUTE —
The Rose-Hulman softball team will visit a familiar foe today when the Engineers take on crosstown rival Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in a nonleague doubleheader.
Rose (12-8 before Tuesday night’s twinbill against Anderson) will battle the Pomeroys (22-17-1), beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Entering Tuesday’s games against Anderson, Carly Heibel led the Engineers and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 1.25 earned-run average to go along with a 7-3 record in 67.1 innings pitched.
Sophomore Marissa Stout of Terre Haute is RHIT's leader at the plate with a .400 batting average and a squad-best 12 runs batted in. Heibel and junior Jessica Ahlborn lead the squad with three home runs each and Ahlborn adds a .377 average and a team-best 26 hits — 12 of them extra-base knocks.
The Woods was ranked No. 1 in the latest U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association coaches poll. The Pomeroys are coming off Sunday’s split with second-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville, where SMWC won 3-1 and lost 6-4.
Sophomore Sarah Burnham leads the Pomeroys with a .352 batting average to go along with 37 hits, 21 runs, 19 RBI, 10 doubles, five triples and two home runs. Junior Kirby Schuble adds a .349 average with 16 RBI and Brooke Jordan is batting .340 with 32 hits, 20 RBIs and six doubles.
Jordan also is the club’s top pitcher, as her 11 wins lead the USCAA. She holds a 3.70 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 106 innings.
