Lansing excited about Etherington's signing with Sycamores

TERRE HAUTE — The spring signing period for men’s basketball is usually a time to use available scholarships to load up on junior college additions and transfers.

To find a diamond-in-the-rough at the high school level who can give you four years? That’s harder to come by.

Indiana State managed to beat the odds when Alex Etherington signed his Letter Of Intent to play for the Sycamores on Wednesday, which was the first day of the spring signing period.

Etherington, a Cicero native, had committed to Kansas State in the summer of 2012. He later backed out of his commitment and re-opened his recruitment. When it became apparent ISU would have scholarships available for the 2013-14 season, the Sycamores pounced.

“I think we have a lot to sell to kids. Lou [Gudino, ISU Associate Head Coach] did a good job sticking with him. Bottom line is he was available, and to get someone as talented as him [in the spring] is good for us,” said ISU head coach Greg Lansing, who could comment on Etherington once he secured his LOI.

Etherington averaged 18 points and 6.1 rebounds for Hamilton Heights in his just-completed senior season. The Huskies won the Mid-Indiana Conference championship and a sectional title. Etherington had 12 points in the North-South All-Star Classic at Rose-Hulman on Sunday.

“There’s an awful lot to like. He’s from a basketball family and he’s an exceptional athlete. He can score in a variety of ways,” Lansing said.

Most observers, and Etherington himself, agreed that he’s more of a driver than a shooter. Lansing wouldn’t argue that point.

“He’s really aggressive on the offensive end. He likes to drive and dunk on people. He’s such a good athlete that he’s been able to go by people,” Lansing said.

Etherington will join Fort W…ayne Northrop’s Brenton Scott as incoming four-year players next season. It is possible he could redshirt. It has been discussed by Etherington and Lansing.

“To his credit, he brought it up the second time we talked to him. We’ll make the decision, as we usually do, when the first game of the season rolls around,” Lansing said.

ISU has one scholarship available to give. It is likely the Sycamores will seek a junior college big man.
