TERRE HAUTE — Play begins in the revamped high school boys golf state finals today at The Legends of Indiana Golf Club at Franklin.

With a smaller field of 15 teams and individual qualifiers, all teams will play both days, or 36 holes, to determine team and individual champs.

Terre Haute North Vigo is at state for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, and Luke Brotherton of Greencastle is one of the individual qualifiers.

Fifth score proved key for the Patriots last week as they shot 304 in the Linton Sectional at Phil Harris Course and the Washington Regional at Country Oaks.

North and Terre Haute South tied for first in the sectional, and the Patriots took the first-place trophy with their fifth score. In the regional, North tied Brownsburg for third place and the final qualifying slot in the finals. Again, the Patriots advanced with the better fifth score.

Junior Adam LaGrange led the Patriots in the regional with 73. He is joined in the lineup by four seniors: Sam Pollock, Evan Perdiew, Andrew Behnke and Ryan Baker. Pollock shot 74 in the regional, Baker 76 and Behnke 81 for North while Perdiew had the fifth score of 82 that proved vital.

Abe Nasser Jr. is the North coach. He said he has reminded the players all year of the importance of each shot and each score. Last week’s action bore out the importance of both.

“We’ll see what we can do,” he said about the finals.

North and Carmel are the two Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference teams in the field; the Greyhounds rallied to get third place in the Lafayette Jeff Regional.

Carmel was ranked in the polls all season and took MIC honors at Hulman Links. North received votes in some of the polls for honorable mention. The Patriots and Triton are the only teams at state not in the Top 20 in the poll.

Brotherton is a junior at Greencastle and was second low medalist in the regional at Country Oaks. He had a tournament-low 32 and 38 in shooting 70.

North’s tee times begin at 9:21 a.m. Brotherton tees off at 8:09.
