Indiana’s Hulls toughs out his school-record 134th game

Dayton, Ohio — Jordan Hulls was scrambling for a loose ball in the first half Sunday when a Temple player collided with him.

Indiana’s senior guard clutched at his shoulder. He checked out, would check back in, then checked back out for the rest of the first half.

When he came out for the second half, he had a brace on underneath his jersey. But he wasn’t about to miss any more of his school-record 134th game.

“My shoulder’s good,” Hulls said after the Hoosiers’ 58-52 victory over the Owls. “I’m sure it will be a little sore, but nothing too serious.

“You have to do a lot more to me than that to keep me off the floor in this kind of situation.”

Hulls ended up playing just 19 minutes on Sunday, his fewest minutes of the season. But after missing both of his shots in the first half, he was 2 of 3 from the field in the second, including one of IU’s four 3-pointers for the game.

“My teammates had confidence in me,” he said.

So did his coach.

“Jordan was playing through some pain, making two big shots,” Tom Crean said.

• Rough day for Zeller — Cody Zeller was a little concerned.

He knew he had been having trouble keeping the basketball. He had six turnovers Sunday, not the usual performance for the normally sure-handed Zeller.

“They were a tough team,” Zeller said. “They weren’t as big as some of the Big Ten teams we played against. Toughness makes up for a lot of that.

“I thought for sure I was going to set a turnover record with all the mistakes I was making.”

His coach came to his defense.

“Don’t worry, Cody,” Tom Crean said. “We wouldn’t have let you set the record. We’d have got you out of there before the record was set.”

For what it’s worth, Zeller did have 15 points and six rebounds to help IU’s victory.

• Final 4 for Oladipo — The Hoosiers will have to win two more games to reach the Final Four, but Victor Oladipo already has something to look forward to that weekend.

The Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year will be named the Friday before the Final Four in Atlanta, and Oladipo is one of the four finalists.

He’ll be competing with Michigan’s Trey Burke, Creighton’s Doug McDermott and Georgetown’s Otto Porter for the award.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
