METRO ROUNDUP: Golden Gophers blank Sycamores

ISU softball splits with Wichita State

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota evened the weekend college baseball series with Indiana State by recording a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Ben Meyer pitched the complete game for the Gophers, striking out 11, walking none and allowing five hits.

Devin Moore took the loss for ISU, giving up two runs and five hits in a six-inning stint. Kurt Kudrecki allowed a run and two hits in the final two innings.

Minnesota bunched four of its hits off Moore to score twice in the bottom of the third, then added its finaI run in the seventh.

Meyer allowed Sycamore runners to reach second base just twice. Freshman Taylor Steen was 2 for 3 for the Sycamores, his first ISU hits.

The rubber game of the series between the 6-7 Sycamores and 12-7 Minnesota is at 1 p.m. today.

On Friday,  ISU starting pitcher Sean Manaea rolled his ankle while celebrating ISU’s win over the Gophers. According to ISU’s sports information staff, Manaea’s injury is not believed to be serious. He is day-to-day and is still expected to start next Friday when ISU opens Missouri Valley Conference play at home against Southern Illinois.

* DePauw tops Rose-Hulman — On Friday, DePauw scored three runs in the top of the eighth to defeat the Engineers 7-6, coming back from an early 5-1 deficit.

Bobby Newman had two hits and three RBIs and Patrick Klima, Donald Stopka and Donnie Waters added two hits each for Rose. Ben Menich left with a lead after pitching seven innings, giving up four runs and 11 hits. 

The Engineers (3-7) return to action with an 11 a.m. matchup against DePauw and a 5 p.m. matchup with Concordia Chicago on Saturday.

* Marshall 2, East Central 0 — At Broadlands, Ill., Marshall opened its 2013 high school season by getting a one-hit shutout from K.J. Rogers and Austin Osborn.
