METRO ROUNDUP: Jack McVicker brings home trophies from around world

TERRE HAUTE — Back in Terre Haute after weeks of traveling around the world, Jack McVicker can show off more awards from his successes in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

On Nov. 3, he competed in the Senior 2 (ages 40-45) lightweight black-belt division of the World No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships at Long Beach, Calif. In the first round, he defeated Troy Acker of California by two points with an arm-drag, double-leg takedown. After Acker defeated James Jung in the semifinals, McVicker was forced to fight Acker again to win the division championship.

“He changed his strategy to immediately pull guard to stop my takedowns,” McVicker told the Tribune-Star. “I worked to pass his guard as he fought to keep me from passing. I ended up winning a referee’s decision to win the gold medal.”

Next McVicker competed in the open division, where his first opponent was Matt Baker, another Californian and gold medalist in the medium heavyweight division.

“He pulled me to his guard and attempted to sweep me,” McVicker said. “I maintained my base and controlled the top position. I scored an advantage midway [through the match]. Matt worked for a deep half-guard sweep. I eventually score a guard pass to win 3-0.”

In the final, McVicker faced 6-foot-6 Stephen Hall of Texas. Hall was gold medalist in the ultra-heavy division.

“I knew he was going to pull guard,” McVicker reflected about his thoughts at the beginning of that match. “Therefore, I came out and nailed a beautiful low single to take the lead 2-0. He recovered his guard and worked on scoring. My strategy was to stay busy and keep him from defending my pass. In the last minute, he was able to secure a foot lock attempt. I had to scramble to save my foot. Then he switched to a sweep. I was able to keep my balance and recover back to my feet for the victory. He scored two advantages, but I had the two points for the gold.”

One week later, McVicker traveled to Germany to compete in the inaugural Munich Open, where he entered the Senior 1 (36-40) middleweight black-belt division.

In the semifinals, he took on Bruno Zancaner, a Brazilian living in London.

“I shot a single leg and switched over to a double leg to score 2-0,” McVicker mentioned.

In the finals, he squared off against Romanian Mihaita Tudor.

“I shot a single leg and he tried to counter with a shoulder lock,” McVicker described. “I scored two [points] on the takedown. I worked to break his guard and he tried to keep it closed.”

That match ended as a 2-0 victory for McVicker.
