Ramblin’ Reck: Even after 20-point loss, Sycamores move up to 51st in RPI

TERRE HAUTE — Checking out some basketball polls and rankings -- colleges first:

In spite of losing to Wichita State, Indiana State moved up to 51st in the weekly RPI totals from 63. Some other rankings: Kansas 1, Wisconsin 4, Villanova 5, Wichita State 9, Creighton 10, Illinois 58, Northern Iowa 70, Indiana 77, Missouri State 78, Purdue 87, Butler 90, Notre Dame 94, Illinois State 108.

The Sycamores have the top record among the state's NCAA Division IA teams at 14-4. IPFW is next at 15-6 followed by Purdue 13-5 and Indiana 12-6. They'll be out to get back on track tonight in Chicago against Loyola and will play Illinois State at home on Saturday.

Indiana State's women's teams leads the Missouri Valley Conference standings and faces Missouri State on Saturday in Hulman Center before taking on second-place Illinois State on Monday.

Creighton and Villanova met in a Big East game Monday and it was not close. The Bluejays won 96-68 and set a team mark with 21 3-pointers. Ethan Wragge tied a school record with nine treys, scoring 27 points, and Doug McDermott had 23.


Carmel is No. 1 in Class 4A in the state boys basketballl polls but dropped out of the USA Today Top 25 completely after losing by four points to Indianapolis Cathedral. Terre Haute South already has faced the Greyhounds and they are a future foe of Terre Haute North.

Evansville Reitz is in the Top 20 in the Associated Press list. North and South both play the Panthers.

Guerin Catholic is No. 3 in the Class 3A poll and will be at South for a rescheduled game on Monday.

Sullivan has the top ranking of teams in the area, ranking third in the Class 2A AP poll. North Knox is 10th.

Lawrence North is No. 1 in the girls 4A AP poll and first in the coaches poll for all classes. South played LN last week.

Lawrence North also was 13th on the USA Today Top 25 list last week.

Heritage Christian is first in the Class 2A list and seventh in the coaches list; North will play the top team this week.
