Metro: Miller fires in 32 to lead Rose men to victory

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman sophomore Jimmy Miller scored a career-high 32 points and the Engineers earned their eighth straight men’s basketball victory by a 74-56 count over Franklin on Wednesday night in Hulbert Arena.

Miller finished 9 of 12 from the field and 11 of 12 from the free-throw line with seven rebounds in the first 30-point game of his career. He also became the first player on the current roster other than preseason All-American Julian Strickland to record a 30-point game.

Strickland provided 17 points and six rebounds of his own on 7-of-15 shooting with two assists and two steals. Sophomore Tyler Duffy also reached double figures with 10 points and four assists.

Bailey Howard returned after missing the last two games due to injury to lead the Franklin offense with 17 points. Terry Sargent also reached double figures with 11 points for the Grizzlies.

Rose (11-3 overall) is tied with Mount St. Joseph for first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings at 6-1 in league games. Those teams will clash at 3 p.m. Saturday in Hulbert Arena. Franklin stands 6-8 and 3-4 respectively.

In women’s college basketball Wednesday:

• Franklin 51, Rose-Hulman 31 — At Franklin, the host Grizzlies used a dominating second half to break open a close game and defeat Rose-Hulman in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Freshman Jamie Loving and junior Sheree Williams led the Engineers with six points each.

Rose-Hulman (6-8, 4-3 HCAC) returns home after going 2-1 in three straight games on the road, as the Engineers host Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at Hulbert Arena. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. Franklin is now 7-6 and 5-1 respectively.
