Terre Haute's Mascari earns All-American finish in 10,000 meters

EUGENE, ORE. — Indiana State sophomore John Mascari finished 11th in the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run Wednesday night at historic Hayward Field.

After running right with the sixth, seventh and eighth place runners in the field late in the race, Mascari held on to earn second-team All-American honors with his time of 29 minutes, 30.76 seconds.

Mascari was already thinking about getting back for another shot, pointing out that he’s among the top five underclassmen finishers.

“I’m pleased with it. Much more to come. I just want to take it step by step and it’s going to come even more,” Mascari said in a phone interview minutes after the race.

“It went out harder than in the last 10Ks I’ve done. I tried holding on as long as I could with the 6, 7, 8 guys. I really didn’t let the hype get to me,” Mascari said.

Coach John McNichols was pleased with Mascari’s race, which was the first 10,000-meter Sycamore qualifier at the NCAA meet.

The former Terre Haute North standout led one of three packs of four runners to form a pack of eight near the five-mile mark of the 6.2-mile race. The top four runners were led by freshman NCAA champion Edward Cheserek and had already separated themselves.

So Mascari was racing for fifth.

“He ran with those guys for another mile, but got a side stitch and had to back off a little bit to get it under control. That’s when they separated,” McNichols said.

Mascari’s sophomore year was a memorable one: an All-American 32nd-place finish in cross country and a second-team All-American for the 10,000.

“Being 11th, that’s a nice start to his outdoor racing. It gets pretty tough when you get to the national championships,” McNichols said.

Mascari, who hasn’t rested since September, looks forward to taking 7-10 days to rest before getting ready for cross country.

“Nothing to hang my head for. Being one of 24 guys here, it’s an accomplishment. Super blessed,” Mascari said.
