Metro roundup: Rex fall 3-1 at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Springfield starting pitcher Chance Simpson allowed just four hits in 72⁄3 innings of work as the Terre Haute Rex fell 3-1 at Robin Roberts Field.

Springfield never trailed in the contest. The Sliders scored in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Kaden Moore’s RBI single in the fifth halved the deficit for the Rex, but they would score no further runs.

The Rex (7-4) are a half-game ahead of Hannibal in the Prospect League West Division. The Rex travel to Chillicothe, Ohio to play against the Paints tonight.


• Grubnich leads Indiana Amateur
— At Noblesville, Nicholas Grubnich shot 69 for the second straight day to widen his lead in the Indiana Amateur being played at Purgatory Golf Club.

Grubnich's 138 total is three shots better than three golfers at 141 after 36 holes with the field cut for the final two rounds and three more players are at 142. Thomas Goss of Terre Haute made the cut and is tied for 54th, shooting 78-75-153.

Clayton French of Linton and Phillip Myers of Terre Haute both qualified for the event. French went 80-78 for 158 and  Myers was 89-79 for 168.

Auto racing

• Too wet —
At Gas City, rain and wet grounds wiped out the first Indiana Midget Week race scheduled for Wednesday at I-69 Speedway.

The U. S. Auto Club series will begin tonight at Lincoln Park Speedway at Putnamville.
