TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South outscored two opponents a combined 19-1 in Big Four Classic softball action Saturday and claimed its second straight title in the annual event.
The Braves, West Vigo and Terre Haute North all went 2-1 in Big Four games. South won on the runs-allowed tiebreaker to claim the trophy in the competition played at South this season.
South opened the day with a 10-0 victory over Northview concluded in six innings. Hanna Gossman limited the Knights to three hits in the shutout and had two hits for the winners.
In the second game, South led all the way to defeat West Vigo 9-1 with Jackie Swain going the distance for the winners.
Mackenzie McGregor socked her eighth homer of the season in the first inning to set a single-season mark and counting for the Braves. She also has the career mark of 23.
Kelsey Marlow socked a bases-loaded double to hike the South lead to 4-0 in the second frame and Alexis Higgins tripled in a run to begin a four-run fifth for South.
Tracy Schilling was 3 for 3 for South while Marlow was 2 for 3 and drove in three runs for the Braves, now 13-6 for the season. Hollie Jones, McGregor and Carlee McFarland all had two hits.
South coach Dwayne Stout was pleased with the play of his team in the two games.
“Our pitchers did a great job, allowing one run in the two games and we had offense, pitching and defense in both. I was pleased that Mackenzie got the record and Tracy caught both games in the hot, humid conditions,” he said.
“Give West Vigo credit … a much-improved team,” he added.
The Braves will take on a ranked Class A Clay City team on Monday and face Linton in Senior Night action on Thursday.
