Redneck Quaker: Crappie bait available if you keep looking

TERRE HAUTE — For those wanting to catch catfish on the river or crappie in a lake, there is a great place in town to pick up your live bait.

Inland Aquatics is located at 10 Ohio St., at the intersection of the Wabash River and Ohio, but you can’t get to it from Ohio Street. It is easily accessed from Wabash Avenue cul de sac, directly behind the Courthouse. The alternate parking is at the other end of Fairbanks Park from the boat ramp with plenty of room for trucks pulling boat trailers.

They have sold tropical fish for 20 years. There is always feeder goldfish and red wigglers available for the aquarium customers and a lot of fishermen stop to pick up some last-minute bait supplies. They became aware of the need of live bait in Terre Haute since Gander Mountain closed its bait shop.

They currently have crappie minnows (tuffies), assorted goldfish, crickets, bee moths, night crawlers and red worms in stock. If there is enough demand they will stock soft-shell crayfish, shiners, and leaches. They also offer cricket tubes, minnow buckets, oxygen tablets, etc.

You may want to check out their feeder minnow called a Rosey Red that is incredibly temperature tolerant (to 95 degrees) in gray or orange. It may be a great alternative to a crappie minnow.

The only drawback is they open at noon, however if folks would contact them and show interest in stopping early morning they will make it happen for you.

Anyone wanting to try a different bow range go up to the Illiana Bow Club. From Terre Haute go up Indiana 63 north to Cayuga and turn west on Highway 234 going 5 miles to the sign on the north side of the road that says Sam’s Pro Shop. To contact them, call 217-662-6065.

Floyd Jackson from West Terre Haute shoots a traditional bow and says it’s a great place.

Some upcoming shoots are; 1. June 16 is a regular shoot. 2. July 21 is an all-youth shoot. 3. Aug. 18 is a regular shoot. 4. Sept. 14 is a coon shoot and 5. Sept. 15 is a regular shoot.

For you black-powder enthusiasts, the Riley Conservation Club is the place to be. You’ve never seen so much skin in your life. No, it’s not a nudist colony, but a bunch of mountain men wearing animal skins. They not only shoot their muzzleloaders, but throw knifes as well as throwing a fit once in a while.

They are good, down-to-earth people who work hard on going back in time to enjoy the more simple things in life.

Shoots coming up: June 2, June 30, Aug. 4, Aug. 25, Sept. 20 and Oct. 27 (a meat shoot).

To find the club, take Indiana 46 toward Riley coming from Terre Haute to the Snack Shack and turn right going south to the T in the road and the club will be in front of you. Or go to Indiana 59 in Riley to turn south and then turn back right at the tracks to follow your nose to the club on the left in a mile or two.

Shoots begin at 10 a.m. and they finish by 3 p.m. For more information, call Bill Wheelock at 812-847-3360 or email As Jeremiah Johnson would say, keep your nose into the wind and keep your gun powder dry, pilgrim.
