West Vigo baseball advances with 10-0 win behind Stewart's two-hitter

TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo got off to a good start in Class 3A high school sectional baseball action Wednesday evening at Dick Ballinger Field.

The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning of the first sectional game and went on to defeat Brown County 10-0 in five innings with Kevin Stewart hurling a two-hitter.

The host team is 19-5 and will meet either Edgewood or Greencastle in a semifinal contest this evening at 5:30 p.m. Owen Valley and South Vermillion are matched up in the other game with the winners advancing to the championship game on Saturday.

West Vigo punched out five straight singles with one out in the first frame. Donnie Ames had two of his five RBI in the four-run start.

The Vikes made it 5-0 in the third inning when Brandin Behringer led off with a double and scored on another RBI by Ames.

West Vigo plated five runs in the fourth frame when five straight batters reached base, Behringer and Davie Inman with doubles. Ames drove in two more runs in the action with a single before being tagged out at second going for a double to end the inning.

Culley DeGroote served as coach for the game and cited the work of Stewart.

“He hit his spots, changed up speeds . . . did what he's done all season. We had some good at-bats and made good contact,” he said.

Stewart is 8-1 for the season, losing only to a tough Zionsville team in the season opener. He walked one batter, hit one and struck out seven batters, including the last two to end the game.

“My best pitch was my curve ball. We had solid defense,” he said.

The senior plans to continue playing baseball at Vincennes University. Right now, he's focused on the sectional.

Behringer and Inman both were 3 for 3 as the Vikes finished with 12 hits. Behringer also scored three runs and drove in three runs with two doubles while Inman scored twice and drove in a run.

Ames was 2 for 2 and drove in the five runs.

“I've been seeing the ball well and getting good swings,” said Behringer, who said he had 10 or 15 RBIs in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Chase Snider singled and Tanner Hamm doubled for the Eagles' hits. Brown County finished 6-17 and lost three five-inning games to West Vigo.
