Jackson leads Linton over West Vigo 60-40

TERRE HAUTE — Linton got off to a good start against West Vigo in Saturday's third game of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic boys high school basketball tournament and will play for the consolation championship as a result of its 60-40 victory.

Bryant Jackson led the Miners, now 4-2, in scoring with 16 points and had 14 of them in the first quarter. He hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range and the Miners had a 23-6 lead after eight minutes, canning 8 of 15 from the field as a team.

They outscored the Vikings 12-7 in the second stanza to hold a 35-13 lead at the intermission and took a 53-23 lead into the final quarter.

Linton was good on 45 percent of its shots (23 of 51) for the game and made 6 of 13 3-pointers. West Vigo connected on 16 of 40 shots and converted 7 of 14 treys.

Ryan Woodward was the other Miner in double figures with 12 points, while Josh Dieball had eight rebounds and Zach Ridell six with Linton holding a 34-21 edge on the boards.

Keegan McCain came off the bench to lead the Vikings in scoring with 12 points, firing in four 3-pointers. Hayden Corenflos had 10 points before fouling out early in the final period.

Freshman Tyler Kernstein grabbed five rebounds for the 4-5 Vikes.

Linton coach Joey Hart said getting off to a good start was a key.

“We put some pressure on them. We made some shots and they missed some early. We found Bryant and he got us going. Our ball movement … our energy was really good early in the game,” he said.

Hart said depth is an asset for his team.

“We have a lot of guys who can play. Zach Riddell was in foul trouble early … and scored 10 points. I like the way we were arriving at the basketball. I would have liked to have finished the game a little better … other than that, we had a good game,” he added.

Hart says he is pleased with the start of the season.

“We feel like we are about three possessions away from being unbeaten. We still have a long way to go. We're still learning. It's a fun group to coach,” he said.

West Vigo coach Joe Boehler thought his players might have still been patting themselves on the back for Friday's victory over Shakamak.

“I just think Linton is a really good team. They played very well. … We didn't show up to play. Linton jumped on us and our heads went down and it kind of snowballed from there,” he said.

“We had too many turnovers and got killed on the boards. Our effort was not there. … I was proud of the last group on he floor and their effort.”
