TERRE HAUTE — The longest postseason run in high school football history for Terre Haute North resulted in the Patriots having the most representatives on the All-Wabash Valley team announced today by the Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association.
Coach Chris Barrett’s team wasn’t the only successful one in the fall, however, so spots on this team were hard to come by due to a similar postseason run by Linton, postseason dreams hampered by injuries in the case of South Putnam and North Vermillion, postseason hopes squashed by an unfortunate sectional in the case of Greencastle and a first-in-a-while playoff run for Mattoon. There was also a season-long top-10 team in North Central and an Illinois playoff team from Robinson.
How hard was it to make the team? Casey, a Class A final four team in Illinois, isn’t represented on the first or second team.
North is represented by nine players in all, seven on the first team, with Class 5A all-state selections Ricky Brookins, Lucas Comer, Wyatt Stoelting and Kai Stratten leading the way.
Brookins, who erased several Anthony Thompson records during his senior year, is among first-team offensive selections along with Comer, one of his blockers, and quarterback Chris Barrett II, the team’s at-large offensive pick. Zach Potter of North is also the first-team kicker.
Stoelting and Stratten, who helped a hard-hitting Patriot defense from linebacker and defensive back spots respectively, are joined on the first team by defensive tackle Ricky Scank. Second-team Patriots are center Forrest Lowery and safety Austin Massey.
Linton has two first-team selections in defensive lineman Wyatt Franklin and punter Dane Rupska, although Rupska’s value to the team could have come at several other positions on either side of the ball as well. The Miners’ four second-team picks — offensive lineman Zach Riddell, running back Zane Hayden, receiver Grant Stamm and defensive at-large pick Cody VanWinkle — gives them six all-Valley players overall, the second-best representation.
Terre Haute South’s season wasn’t as successful on paper as it appeared on the field, including a victory over the Patriots, and the Braves are represented by five players, four on the first team. Chosen from South are Class 5A all-stater (and new Indiana State University commitment) Junior Berry at defensive tackle, Jacob Johnson at wide receiver, Dickie Rollins on the offensive line and Timmy Herrin — whose injury certainly impacted his team’s record — at defensive back. Duane Deerwester is a second-team linebacker.
Greencastle also has five picks, including three first-teamers. Offensive lineman Dustin Williams, receiver Seth Brown and defensive lineman Grant Mundy are the first-team choices, while tight end Brandon Gierke and quarterback Tyler Scott (an at-large pick) are on the second team.
Also getting five players chosen was South Putnam, with running back Lucas Lorian and defensive back Wes Riner on the first team and offensive lineman Joe Masters, defensive lineman Rudy Harris and linebacker Braden Patrick on the second team.
North Vermillion was unbeaten until first-team quarterback Brayden Woodard missed a sectional semifinal game, and the Falcons have four players on the team. Also a first-teamer is offensive lineman Robby Davis, while offensive lineman Lucas Clark and linebacker Ethan Kunkle are on the second team.
Mattoon also has four players on the team: defensive back Derek Pierce on the first team and quarterback Jared Pilson, running back Jacob Stephens and receiver Malik Joyner on the second unit.
North Central is represented by three players, all on the first team. Chase VanSchoyck, a Class A first-team all-stater who broke the state’s single-game rushing record twice, is a running back, Alek Copeland an offensive lineman and all-stater Dillon Bailey the defensive at-large player.
Northview is also represented by three players, but all are second-teamers: kicker Trey Boor, defensive lineman Derek Mills and receiver Tyler Rector.
Sullivan’s two selections are both first-team receivers, Class 2A all-state tight end Jake Kinnaman and wide receiver Michael Hutchcraft.
Robinson stars who helped the Maroons to a successful year included first-team linebacker Nick Berty and second-team running back Jason Richart.
Neither North Putnam nor West Vigo had seasons as successful as they usually do, but the Cougars have a first-team linebacker in Grant Bryan and a second-team defensive lineman in Ben Wiatt, while the Vikings have two second-team choices in offensive lineman Sam McClain and defensive back Jimmy Maples.
Teams with one second-team player each are Marshall (punter Derick Davidson), Edgewood (defensive lineman Damien Chambers), Olney (defensive back Nick Dobbs) and Owen Valley (defensive back Seth Sparks).
Most if not all of the senior members of this team will appear in June at Memorial Stadium in the annual WVFCA all-star game.
