Metro roundup: ISU volleyball sweeps Loyola 3-0

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State volleyball team captured its third straight victory and second straight in the Missouri Valley Conference as the Sycamores swept past the visiting Loyola University Ramblers 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) Friday night in the ISU Arena.

The Sycamores (11-12 overall, 4-7 MVC) have now won four of their last five matches. Indiana State will host Bradley tonight, with the first serve at 7.

Loyola fell to 9-15 overall and 4-8 in the Valley. The Ramblers will be at Illinois State today.

Senior outside hitter Morgan Dall led the Sycamores’ attack with 21 kills in 35 attempts with just three errors for a .514 attack percentage. Senior setter Loni Mackinson had 42 assists on the night, while senior Molly Murphy had 17 digs.


Ace posted — At Rea Park, Rick Wilcoxon of Terre Haute fired a hole-in-one on the 128-yard third hole Wednesday.

Wilcoxon used an 8-iron. Witnessing the feat were Jim Cook, Chuck Payne and Burt Robinson.


ISU women win — At Des Moines, Iowa, freshman forward Abby Reed scored the golden goal in the 104th minute to help the Indiana State women’s soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 win over Drake Thursday evening.

The win gives the Sycamores the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Missouri Valley Conference tournament and a bye to play in Evansville next Friday.

It marks the first winning regular season in program history as ISU completes action with a 9-8-0 record and 4-2-0 mark in the Valley. It also goes down in the record book as the highest finish in league action in Sycamore history as the previous high finish was third in 2010. 

The game was a back and forth battle between the two teams resulting in a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. After a scoreless first overtime period, Reed was able to find the back of the net just 3:15 into the final overtime session.

Reed led the team with four shots as the Sycamores posted 12 in the contest. Junior midfielder/forward Natalie Vaught also fired off two shots as ISU also led with four corner kicks.

 Reed’s goal marks her ninth of the season, a team-high as she now has 20 points in 2013.

Freshman goalie Brittany San Roman (7-6-0) posted her fourth shutout of the season as she faced 17 shots on the evening, recording six saves.

The first half was nearly identical as both teams had five shots and two saves while Drake (3-11-3, 1-4-1 MVC) held the 2-1 advantage in corners. The Bulldogs outshot the Sycamores 11-4 in the second half but ISU held a 3-1 shot advantage in the overtime periods.

The win extends the Sycamores’ win streak to five games, which ties the program record for longest win streak which matches a five-game skid in 2010.

The Sycamores will face the winner of the No. 3 Loyola and No. 6 Drake game that will take place in Chicago at 5 p.m. Sunday.
