Northview volleyball squad rolls

DANVILLE — With only a week left in the regular season, the Northview volleyball team gave host Danville a preview of what could be a regional rematch in the IHSAA state tournament.

Northview overpowered a Danville [17-9] in three impressive games, 25-10, 24-9 and 25-12. The Class 3A 15th-ranked Knights moved to 29-3 on the season.

“The way we played this past weekend [in the North Montgomery Invitational] and the way we’ve been able to handle the ball with our swings, we’re getting better each time out and really starting to build momentum and confidence,” Northview coach Scott McDonald said.

None of the three games was close. The Knights jumped out to an 8-3 lead in game one, scored the first eight points in game two and was quickly up 8-6 in game two.

Getting that first pass to setter Taylor Hess, who passed out 26 assists, the Knights had seven different players with kills at the net, led by Kenzi Kumpf, who had an all around strong performance with 10 kills and five service aces.

Shelbi Morris had six kills and two aces and Mikayla Rowan and Morgan Stearley each had five kills and one block at the net.

“The thing that’s good for us is our ball control has steadily improved as the year has progressed. If we can pass the ball like that and we can run the hitters at different angles and different spots in the hitting zone we’re pretty tough to defend,” McDonald said.

Northview served 14 aces in the win. Kumpf, who mixed a fastball with a change up, had five aces, McDonald, Hess and Kerwtie Shaw each delivered two and Ashley Heck, McDonald and Morris one each.

In game three, Danville tried to double-block Northview’s Stearley and Morris in the middle and Kumpf on the outside. It worked a couple of times, then Hess, Morris and Rowan started hammering the ball to put the match away.

“That’s the luxury we’ve got of having so many hitters,” McDonald said.

Northview returns to action at home Wednesday against Crawfordsville.

Northview    25    25    25
