Seeing double at the soccer match

Rose-Hulman goalie had to look very familiar to Centre player who took 12 shots

There had to have been an interesting family reunion late Sunday afternoon after Rose-Hulman had battled regionally ranked Centre to a scoreless tie in women’s soccer.

The visiting Engineers were outshot 34-5 but managed the draw, thanks in part to a spectacular effort by goalkeeper Lucinda Combs.

Combs, who now has four shutouts in Rose-Hulman’s seven matches so far this season, had 13 saves Sunday, six of them against the Colonels’ star player.

The name of that star player who had 12 shots in all, more than twice the Rose-Hulman total? Alex Combs, Lucinda’s twin sister.

Now 4-1-2, Rose-Hulman hosts Illinois Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In other soccer:

• Eastern Michigan 4, Indiana State 0 — At Ypsilanti, Mich., the host team scored twice in each half in improving to 3-4-1 for the season. ISU fell to 3-6.

Eastern Michigan had a 22-12 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. Abby Reed led the Sycamores with four shots. Abby Keller had six saves in goal.

ISU opens Missouri Valley Conference play Friday at Loyola of Chicago.

Volleyball

• Indiana State 3, Evansville 0 — At the ISU Arena, the host Sycamores got their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season Saturday night, downing the Purple Aces 25-23, 25-23, 27-25.

Cassandra Willis had a career-high 14 kills and also had a team-high five blocks for the Sycamores, now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the MVC.

Morgan Dall had 13 kills, Victoria Swigart 11, Loni Mackinson 40 assists and Molly Murphy 25 digs.

ISU has a 7 p.m. home match Tuesday against Chicago State.
