Rex double up Hannibal 4-2

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex got six strong innings from starting pitcher Louis Cohen and timely hits from Kyle Zimmerman and Izzak Silva in a 4-2 win over the visiting Hannibal Cavemen on Monday night at Bob Warn Field.

Cohen scattered six Hannibal hits over six innings, allowing one earned run in his first win of the season. Bryan Nacke earned his third save, pitching the ninth inning.

Kyle Kempf and Zimmerman put the Rex up 2-0 on their first two trips to the plate.

Kempf, who started the night batting .380, led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, moved to third on an infield ground out and scored on Zimmerman’s infield hit up the middle.

Kempf reached base on a Hannibal error to lead off the third inning. Will Colantono and Kempf executed a perfect hit-and-run to put Rex on first and third. One out later, Zimmerman’s fly ball to deep right field brought Kempf home for a 2-0 lead.

Hannibal cut the Rex lead to 2-1 in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Zach Nichols and Damon Waller, but Silva’s first hit as a member of the Rex increased the lead to 4-1 in the sixth.

Zimmerman started the rally with a one-out walk, and Tyler Wampler and Atlee Schwab came through with consecutive infield hits to load the bases. Silva’s bouncing ball into right field brought home Zimmerman and Wampler.
