Metro Roundup: Post 346 wins big at Paducah Tournament

Paducah, Ky. — Wayne Newton Post 346 has won its first two American Legion baseball games at the Paducah Tournament in convincing fashion, downing Cape Girardeau, Mo., 10-1 on Friday after opening with a 17-3 victory over Ballwin, Mo., late Thursday.

Sam Wolf and Cody Brock combined for four hits with two doubles and three RBIs on Friday to support the pitching of Craig Peters in a game shortened to five innings.

One night earlier, T.J. Decker improved his pitching record to 4-0 for the season as Cody Thornton, Jacob Johnson and Preston Tofaute all had three-hit nights.

Post 346 plays twice today, at 12:30 p.m. against Chubiak, Alaska, and at 5:30 against the host team.

• Hannibal 4, Terre Haute Rex 3 — At Hannibal, Mo., Kyle Kempf extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a 2-for-2 night but the visitors got just four other hits in Prospect League play late Thursday night.

Tyler Wampler led off the game by being hit by a pitch and scored on Kempf’s RBI single in the top of the first, and in the fourth inning hits by Evan Heptig and Kempf followed by an error and Kyle Zimmerman’s sacrifice fly gave Terre Haute a 3-1 lead.

The Cavemen took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when three doubles produced two runs, and the Rex didn’t score again.
