GREENCASTLE — After a tough weekend in the Braves Softball Bash tournament, Terre Haute South got just what it needed, a breakout victory.

The Braves pounded out 15 hits, including a first-inning home run by Mackenzie McGregor, en route to a 12-3 victory over host Greencastle. South is now 3-3 and Greencastle 1-4.

“It felt good, the dugout felt right. The girls knew [last weekend] we had a lot of tough teams we were going against. Greencastle is another [tough team and] they played stellar defense the first couple of innings. So [the girls] knew they had to hit it in the gaps and they did a good job of sticking with it, not getting down and keeping the energy up,” South coach Dwayne Stout said.

South took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Hollie Jones, a sophomore batting leadoff for the first time, singled and one out later McGregor hit a two-run home run far over the left field fence. McGregor was 3-of-4 at the plate with four RBI.

“That was great to see, because this weekend [McGregor] struggled a little bit. She went out and hit a lot of balls off tees and got herself back to hitting the ball hard. She did a wonderful job for us,” Stout said.

Jones was 4-for-5 at the plate, scored three runs, drove in another and stole three bases.

“[The Tiger Cubs] couldn’t keep [Jones] off base. She was awesome, especially for a sophomore,” Stout said.

Greencastle, coming off its first win of the season on Saturday at Eminence, never put together a serious threat against winning pitcher Hanna Gossman. The sophomore struck out four, walked two, scattered four hits, gave up two runs, one earned, in six innings on the mound. Kelsey Marlow pitched the seventh inning.

“Hanna Gossman kept them off balance. She mixed up her speeds, hit her spots and a lot of balls came right back to her,” Stout said.

South led 3-1 after three innings, then pulled away with three runs on four hits in the fifth inning, two runs on two hits in the sixth and four runs on five hits in the seventh.
