METRO ROUNDUP: ISU softball team’s winning streak ends

AMES, Iowa — Shelby Wilson hit her second career home run Sunday, but Indiana State’s season-opening softball unbeaten streak ended with a 7-2 loss to host Iowa State in the final game of the Cyclone Classic.

The Sycamores had won two games on both Friday and Saturday, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning Sunday and five more in the bottom of the third.

Wilson led off the fourth with her shot to center field, and Morgan Allee provided a second run when she singled, stole a base and scored on an illegal pitch.

“We have a young team with a lot to learn but they are competing every day; we will get better throughout the season,” coach Shane Bouman said.

Wilson was 2 for 3 for the day and Allee 2 for 4.

“To go 4-1 in our opening weekend gives us a lot of confidence heading to Auburn next weekend,” Bouman said. ISU plays at the Tiger Invitational beginning Thursday, facing host Auburn in the 7 p.m. game that day.

In earlier games last week:

• ISU 7, North Dakota State 1 — On Saturday night, Stephanie Fougerousse pitched a complete-game six-hitter while Alexa Cavin was 3 for 4 with two runs and Meredith Henriksen 2 for 4 with an RBI. Megan Stone added a double.

• ISU 8, Northern Colorado 7 — In Saturday’s first game, the Sycamores scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit.

Kelsey Montgomery had a run-scoring double, Allee a two-run double, Halee Myers two hits — including a two-out, two-run single — and Megan Bunting a steal of home in the inning. Allee was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

• ISU 3, Northern Colorado 2, 9 innings — In Friday’s second game, ISU rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, then won using the international tie-breaker in the ninth.

Bunting was 3 for 4 and Myers 2 for 4 with the game-winning RBI, while Ashli Scott was the winning pitcher with 3.1 hitless innings and five strikeouts.

• ISU 9, IPFW 0, 6 innings — In the season opener Friday, Scott pitched a six-inning two-hitter in a game shortened by the tournament’s eight-run rule.

Shelby Wilson and Allee each were 3 for 3 and Stone was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

And since Indianapolis didn’t have a first-round pick, the Toledo, Ohio, native is getting a lot more scrutiny that most second-rounders taken in the draft.
