Hot early, West Vigo boys cool off, drop WIC game to Edgewood

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Edgewood’s Mustangs invaded the Jim Mann Green Dome on Friday night and left with a pair of Western Indiana Conference high school basketball victories.

The Mustangs made only one free throw in the boys game, but used a 16-6 outburst in the third period to break open an 18-18 game and finish with a 47-36 win.

The Vikings poured in 14 first-quarter points, thanks mostly to three 3-pointers by Adrien Corenflos and another by Aaron Kirby, and led by two at the first stop.

Things cooled down in the second quarter, as the Vikings only managed four points and Edgewood tied the score going to intermission. West Vigo would manage only 22 points over the final three periods.

“We really struggled on the offensive end to get anything going,” West Vigo Coach Joe Boehler said. “Any time you hold a team to 47 points, you think you should have a good chance to win.

“We had a lot of mental mistakes throughout the game.”

Turnovers were one of the main reasons for the low score, as the teams combined for 18 first-half miscues.

Edgewood came out of the blocks strong in the third quarter, as Boehler called timeout after timeout to try to get his team to play as well as he wanted. Edgewood ran off the first eight points of the third period, and the Vikings did not get their first second-half hoop until a Braiden Cardinal basket halfway through the quarter.

Derek Driver hit a pair of 3-pointers for Edgewood to help the guests expand their lead to 34-24 after three periods.

The Mustangs did not slow down to open the final period, as they went on a 13-4 tear to open up a 47-26 advantage.

West Vigo had its best offensive outburst in the final 1:29, as sophomore Tyler Hayes hit eight consecutive free throws in a bizarre turn of events that included a pair of technical fouls on Edgewood for uniform number violations in the scorebook.

Corenflos led West Vigo with 13 points and Hayes was second in scoring with eight. No other Viking had more than three points.
