Wolfe pours in 37 to lead Casey past Linton

TERRE HAUTE — Casey’s Brandon Wolfe delivered one of the best shooting performances in the history of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic on Saturday to overcome one of the most potent one-two combinations this boys high school basketball tournament has seen.

Wolfe scored 37 points to lead the Warriors to a 70-64 victory over Linton in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at Terre Haute South High School.

Casey (8-2) plays tourney host Terre Haute South (5-6) in the championship game of the consolation bracket at 2 p.m. Monday. Linton takes a 6-2 record into the Greene County Invitational next week.

“You want to make it to day four. Anytime you can make it to day four over here you’ve had a good draw. We got a tough draw in the first round, but we got a chance to leave here 3-1 and we’re happy about it,” Casey coach Steve Hawkins said.

Wolfe hit 10 of 19 shots from the floor, including 7 of 14 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 10 of 10 at the free-throw line for the fourth-best scoring game in the Classic history.

The 6-foot-3 junior also topped the 1,000-point mark for his high school career.

“It felt great to get [the 1,000th point] here, especially in this atmosphere. There are always good fans here and I love playing against Linton. We played against them the last two years, had some really good games against them. I just love playing against those guys,” Wolfe said.

Casey needed every one of Wolfe’s points too. Linton’s Dess Fougerousse and Austin Karazsia combined for 48 points on 22-of-34 shooting from the floor and amassed 28 rebounds. Fougerousse had 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting and 14 rebounds and Karazsia had 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 14 rebounds.

With Wolfe scoring 25 points in the first half, Casey led 38-32 at halftime. The Warriors took a 53-45 lead into the fourth quarter.

Linton got within two, 62-60, with 2:11 to play. But Casey’s Trivette Scales, who netted 15 points, hit a three to extend the margin. The Warriors hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 52 seconds.
