South plays well offensively, falls to Reitz

TERRE HAUTE — Evansville Reitz was busy in high school boys basketball on Saturday, meeting Terre Haute South in a rescheduled contest in the afternoon and facing Terre Haute North in the evening.

Both games were played at North and the visiting team won the first game 69-61, using a 9-0 run in the final three minutes to defeat the Braves.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent in the first period and South had two more field goals than the Panthers in assuming a 20-17 advantage after eight minutes.

Reitz outscored the Braves 11-5 in the second stanza and held a 28-25 lead at intermission. The Panthers had just two turnovers and two fouls in the first half, employing a trapping defense.

South came back strong in the third canto and took a 41-40 lead on a bucket by Logan Dinkel but the Panthers closed the quarter with a 5-0 run and took a 45-41 lead into the final period.

The score was tied three times in the last quarter, the last time at 53-all, before Mario Barnes’ bucket put Reitz up 55-53. South stayed close and trailed 60-59 after Timmy Herrin converted on an old-fashioned three-point play but the Panthers scored the next nine points to win their 12th game of the season and second of the weekend.

South coach Scott Ridge was pleased with the way his team came back from a defeat against Ben Davis on Friday.

“Reitz is a great team. Our effort was there. We played well enough to win. I am proud of the way we played. There were a few defensive rebounds we didn’t grab and a few shots that did not fall at the end,” he said.

“We’re getting great effort out of Logan Dinkel. He’s really contributed for us and stepped up after a couple concussions. And Jaylen Minnett stepped up … it is very impressive for a freshman point guard the way he has been playing,” he added.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent for the game, South going 26 for 48 for 54 percent and Reitz firing in 26 of 50 shots for 52 percent. South had a 27-26 edge on the boards while Reitz had a 10-3 edge in free throws.

Timmy Herrin led the 7-9 Braves with 16 points, seven rebounds and a steal while Dinkel had 15 points, a steal and four rebounds. Conner Shipley and Spence Tofaute each had 10 points and combined for nine rebounds.

Reitz had five players in double digits.

Jacob Norman led the 12-4 Panthers with 17 points and Jaelan Stanford had 16. Alex Stein  and  Nate Hansen each had 12 and Barnes tallied 12. Hansen had a game-high eight rebounds. Reitz started five juniors.

South will be on the road twice this week with games at Bloomington South and Indianapolis North Central.
