Competition levels grouped in first-round games

Sectionals at TH North, West Vigo this time around

TERRE HAUTE — Fans of seeding will hate the way the Indiana high school girls basketball sectional pairings were drawn Sunday by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Fans of competitive first-round games will like the draw better.

For the most part, games in the Wabash Valley, which begin Feb. 11, will pit good teams against good teams, teams at the .500 level against others that are breaking even and teams having forgettable seasons having a chance to redeem themselves at least once in postseason play.

Two sectionals will be played in Vigo County this season, and if there’s a happy coach among the ones in those fields it’s probably Ryan Easton of West Vigo.

The Vikings, who play Rockville tonight in a quest for their first winning season in 13 years, not only play their Class 3A sectional at home but need to win just one game to reach the Feb. 15 championship contest. West Vigo lost to that opponent, Owen Valley, during the season, but the other bracket includes Western Indiana Conference champion Edgewood, dangerous Northview and a pretty good Brown County team.

The Class 4A sectional is at Terre Haute North, where coach Mike Allen wasn’t quite as lucky — although maybe good luck in this field would be hard to find. The Patriots would have to survive both Martinsville and five-time defending sectional champion Mooresville to reach the final, while in the other bracket Terre Haute South has Plainfield and perhaps either Brownsburg or Avon to contend with.

Riverton Parke has moved up to Class 2A, and South Vermillion has returned to that class, and both those teams will be playing at Southmont on Feb. 11.

The Panthers meet the host Mounties in one of those pairings with similar records, and the three-win Wildcats play three-win Clinton Central in the other first-round game that night.

Best record in the field belongs to Seeger, which has a bye to play either Riverton Parke or Southmont on Valentine’s Day.

The Class 2A tournament at North Knox did first-round favors to Linton and Sullivan, who have combined for just three wins this year but at least get to play each other.

The favor is very small, however; the winner of that game gets to play the host Warriors, who are flirting with top-10 status. An up-for-grabs opposite bracket finds North Central awaiting either South Knox or Eastern Greene.

Nowhere is the lack of seeding more evident than in the Class A North Vermillion Sectional, where Turkey Run, the host Falcons and Rockville — with 13 combined wins right now — are all in one bracket.

Preseason sectional favorite Lafayette Central Catholic, on the other hand, meets undefeated Attica in the opening game of the other bracket — those teams are ranked seventh and sixth respectively — with a strong Covington team set to face the winner.

Defending champion Shakamak beat Bloomfield — moving back down to Class A — by one point during the season and those teams open the Clay City Sectional against each other.

Eminence and Union play the other Feb. 11 game, with Clay City in the bye position against the Laker-Cardinal survivor and White River Valley, with the best record in the field, set to face Eminence or Union.

Kaden Moore put up the Rex’s first run with a line-drive home run over the left-field wall in the second inning. Welz added his homer in the seventh — with a no-doubt blast to left to add an insurance run.

So just who is Jack Mewhort?
Well, the Indianapolis Colts rookie is slated to take over as the team’s new starting left guard due to the season-ending quad injury suffered Wednesday by veteran Donald Thomas.
A former standout at Ohio State, the 6-foot-6, 308-pound Mewhort was selected by the Colts in the second round of this spring’s NFL draft. And since Indianapolis didn’t have a first-round pick, the Toledo, Ohio, native is getting a lot more scrutiny that most second-rounders taken in the draft.
