Metro/prep sports: Rose’s Montgomery makes D3 nationals

The Tribune-Star

---- — Rose-Hulman’s Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery placed third Saturday at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional for women’s cross country, making her the second Engineer in school history to qualify for the national finals.

Montgomery ran the 6K course in 21 minutes and 44 seconds, breaking her own school record by 16 seconds. The only other Rose female to qualify for the nationals was Rachel Krasich in 2007.

“She was hurting really bad,” Rose-Hulman cross-country coach Geoff Wayton said. “She's about the toughest kid I have ever coached, and she just ran really tough over that last 1,000 meters and came alive on the home stretch.”

Montgomery passed three runners in the final 200 meters to take third place.

Anna Taylor was the only other Rose-Hulman female runner to participate in Saturday’s race, finishing 116th overall with a time of 25:36.

The national finals are 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanover.
