Metro sports: Kaperak wins Hulman Links title again

TERRE HAUTE — Ted Kaperak scored a repeat in golf action Sunday at Hulman Links.

Kaperak won the Hulman Links Club Championship for the second straight year and for the fifth time.

He had rounds of 70 and 74 to finish with a par-144 score. He had three birdies in both rounds and had a five-shot lead after the first round.

Stu Johnson fired a 73 for the best score recorded on Sunday and finished second with 151, while Sam Pollock and Scott Givens tied for third at 152.

Mike Toney and Brent Bocard tied for first in the first flight, each shooting 160. Bocard took the flight title with an eagle on the third hole with Bocard having a birdie on the same hole.

Steve Anderson won the white-tees division. Chuck Payne took the seniors title with Dick Stockberger winning the first flight.

The senior city championship will be played Aug. 17-18 with seniors, super seniors and women’s divisions.

• Bell wins three
— At Belleville, Kan., Christopher Bell was a triple winner in U.S. Auto Club midget racing Saturday at the Belleville High Banks.

Bell won  his heat, the pole dash and led the first 23 laps and last six to win the 40-lap feature with Rico Abreu second. Bell is the midget dirt points leader and takes a 62-point lead over Bryan Clauson into an August 18 race in Wisconsin.

Stockon second — At Haubstadt, Kevin Thomas Jr. won the Hoosier Sprint Nationals run Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.

Chase Stockon took second and Blake Fitzpatrick was third in the Midwest Sprint Car Series feature race. Levi Kissinger won the feature for modifieds.

Brenton bested  Jeremy Busenbark for the Fast 33 win. Other winners were Joe Wilson, Joel Leihsur, Cody Alumbaugh and  Amara Tewell. Laura Hafner won a Pink Ladies race on Friday.

Junior dragsters will be compete in the Half Scale Nationals this Saturday and Sunday.
