Redneck Quaker: Come on out for Nature Day at Clay County Fairgrounds on Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — Purdue’s fifth annual Nature Day is this Saturday at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Rain or shine, it will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fairgrounds are between Brazil and Interstate on Indiana 59.

Activities, displays and workshops include a 10 a.m. creek stomp, an 11 a.m. raptor program and Snakes Alive at noon.

New programs include Backyard Bass, archery, and Be a Tooth Sleuth. Others are stream sampling and testing; forestry; invasive plants; hiking; edible and medicinal plants; herbs; birdhouse building; geocaching; scouting and camping; campfire cooking; answers to lawn and garden problems; butterfly gardening; monarchs, bees, bats and insects; electric safety; birds and bird watching; and wild turkey information.

Come enjoy a fun and educational morning at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Visit with a bald eagle at the raptor program and get up close and personal with the snakes at noon.

For all the gardeners out there, there will be information on scouting, bees, butterfly gardening, invasive plants, forestry, edible and medicinal plants as well as answers to your lawn and garden questions.

Children will be able to catch critters at the creek stomp, and explorers will be able to hike a trail or try geocaching.

All activities are free and open to every one, and there is a drawing for prizes for those who attend.

We hope to see everyone at Nature Day.

The photography contest in conjunction with Nature Day will be held again this year, with divisions for youth and adults. Start taking pictures, because entries are due Friday. Photos need to be framed for hanging or salon mounted.
