Terre Haute South volleyball makes adjustments in 3-0 win at Sullivan

Golden Arrows also switch up their gameplan

BLOOMINGTON — Terre Haute South and Sullivan unveiled some new tactics during a Tuesday night volleyball match at Sullivan High School.

South (6-5), coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Avon Tournament, made changes in its serve receiving game, moving Marissa Coutinho into the middle more often. The move worked, for the Braves overpowered Sullivan 3-0 in the non-conference match.

“It was a rough weekend. Tonight was a win we needed,” South coach Stephanie Millington said.

Sullivan (3-5) changed everything. The Golden Arrows went from a one-setter offense to a two-setter offense with all six players hitting.

“I was very impressed, except for game two. Game two we slacked off and got caught in one serve receive [formation] and couldn’t get out of it. But for having a whole new rotation that we only worked on for 40 minutes one night and 45 minutes another, we did awesome,” Sullivan coach Sue Chagnon said.

The key for South was Coutinho getting that first pass to freshman setter Natalie Scamihorn, who had 27 assists to go along with six kills.

“We moved some people around [on serve receive] just to see some different formations. We can put Marissa [Coutinho] in the middle more often in serve receive. We need a perfect pass so we can get our offense and get our middle to play every time,” Millington said.

Coutinho had a team-high 17 digs. Bailee Williams led the Braves’ net game with 10 kills. Meaghan Etling matched Scamihorn with six kills.

Sullivan’s new attack, with setters Tori Stamper and Kathryn Gilbert each passing out seven assists, was spread out. Abigail Hornback had four kills while Sam Vernelson, Ashley Durall and Cierra McCammon each had three.

South pulled away from a 12-12 tie to win game 25-15, then completely dominated game two 25-5.

South completed the sweep 25-21 in game three, but it was close all the way.

South took an early 8-4 lead on a kill by Maddie Callahan, but back to back aces by Sullivan’s Preslee Vaught got the Golden Arrows within two, 14-12.

A service ace by Meaghan Etling gave South a 16-12 lead, but the Braves couldn’t hold the momentum. A kill by Sullivan’s Sam Vernelson, an ace by Abigail Hornback and the Golden Arrows were within one, 19-18.

A Sullivan error, a tip by Scamihorn and a kill by Etling put South in control to stay.
