PREP ROUNDUP: Terre Haute North pleased with cross country debuts

FRANKLIN — Terre Haute North made its high school cross country debuts Saturday at the Franklin Invitational, the Patriot girls placing third behind Columbus North and Avon and the North boys finishing eighth. Brebeuf edged Columbus North for the boys championship.

Seniors Laura Johnson and Mallory Sanders and freshman Devon Zeck led North’s girls by placing 14th, 17th and 18th respectively, while Peter Davis had a 16th-place finish for the boys team.

Davis’ time was 49 seconds faster than he ran a year ago, while  Caleb Paauwe shaved more than 2 minutes off his 2012 time in this meet.

“Pretty pleased overall, and especially impressed with those performances,” coach Tom Dever said.

• South boys third, girls seventh — At Russiaville, Terre Haute South’s boys finished third — without Jackson Bertoli — and its girls seventh at the Western Invitational.

Bertoli and Spencer Danielson were held out of the meet for precautionary reasons, according to coach Kyle Walsh, but the Braves trailed only 10th-ranked West Lafayette and ninth-ranked Westfield led by Riley Stohler.

Katie Schmidt had a 26th-place finish to lead South’s girls in a meet won by West Lafayette over Carmel.
