Prep football: North Central routs Union 66-6

FARMERSBURG — North Central got off to a good start in the 2013 high school football season Friday night.

Ranked 10th in the early Class A poll, the host Thunderbirds defeated county and Southwest Seven Conference rival Union 66-6.

As expected, seniors Chase VanSchoyck and Dillon Bailey led the Thunderbirds on offense.

VanSchoyck rushed for 319 yards and scored five touchdowns. Bailey rushed for 111 yards and scored four touchdowns, three times in the third period when the T-Birds tallied 25 points.

Anthony Risley scored the other touchdown for the host team in the game played on a warm night.

The Thunderbirds set the tempo at the start when they recovered an onside kickoff and needed just five plays to get on the board, VanSchoyck scoring on a 1-yard run after netting 29 on the third play of the drive.

The Thunderbirds went 50 yards for the only other score of the first period with VanSchoyck going 4 yards for the second score.

North Central had a 41-0 lead at intermission and Bailey got the productive third quarter going with a 69-yard touchdown run that put his team up 47-0.

Sophomore Anthony was the quarterback for Union and connected with Ian Hamburg with a 26-yard pass play to set up the Bulldogs' touchdown with Austin Robertson catching an 11-yard pass from Ellis.

North Central coach Travis Nolting liked what he saw for the most part in the season opener.

“I thought we ran the ball well. Our offensive line looked good, finishing blocks. We were able to share the wealth in the backfield. We were able to do some things we wanted to work on. … Obviously, there are always things you can improve on and we need to do a better job fixing our miscues, timing, pass protection,” he said.

North Daviess is up next for the T-Birds in another home game.

“North Daviess is always well-coached. And a power-run team like us. We have to be very solid on our run defense. … It is a good team for us to play to see where we are and how good we can be. We will have to be well-prepared,” he added.

Union has a home game against Riverton Parke.
