RAMBLIN’ RECK: South grad helps VU to national golf title

TERRE HAUTE — Vincennes University’s men’s golf team claimed the junior college national championship last week with a Terre Haute South Vigo  grad in the lineup.

The Trailblazers shot 910 in the 54-hole event played at the Chautauqua Golf Course in New York to edge Sandhills by four shots for the school’s first title in the sport.

They trailed Jamestown by one shot going into the final round.

Tyler Sloan and South grad Shelby Stewart each finished with 228 scores to tie for 11th place and earn All-America honors, along with Trevor Grant. Stewart had a hole-in-one on the No. 8 hole in the tournament.

Koye Kaiser and Cole Bradbury are recent graduates at Linton and competed in the Washington Regional. They plan to attend VU and hope to play golf, while teammate Clayton French is going to Marian University.

Terre Haute North players Sam Pollock, Andrew Behnke and Ryan Baker all are going to Franklin, while South players Luke Peoples and Sam Mimms will go to Rose-Hulman.

Former South standout Thomas Goss is at Dayton and was at the regional last week.

The windup for baseball:

Class 4A — Indianapolis Cathedral (28-0) vs. Elkhart Central (31-1)

3A — Jasper (32-3) vs. Norwell (32-3)

2A — South Spencer 22-8) vs. Northfield (29-3)

A — Vincennes Rivet (19-12) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (30-5)

The 3A game will be played Friday at Victory Field in Indy. Other games will be Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

Lafayette Central Catholic pitchers have not allowed a single run in the tournament, and most of the team’s games ended after five innings.

Jasper defeated Crawfordsville 11-1 in six innings in the semistate played at Jasper. The Wildcats have won 23 regionals and 12 semistates.

Softball champs were crowned last week. The results:

Class 4A — Portage 2, Franklin 0

3A — Tri-West 7, Yorktown 4

2A — Indianapolis Scecina 4, Adams Central 2

A — Lakewood Park Christian 10, Tecumseh 3
