TERRE HAUTE — Zack Evans drilled the second Terre Haute Rex home run of the season Sunday, smashing a line drive into the trees in left field. The ball left Bob Warn Field in a hurry, but the solo shot was not enough to overcome a 3-1 deficit to the Springfield Sliders.

The West Division leaders got a strong outing from Taylor Krugh, who struck out seven over six innings. Springfield’s Ryan Geudry got a couple big swings connecting for a home run in the fourth and a double in the sixth. The Sliders won the game 3-2.

Krugh allowed the Sliders’ first run to score on a wild pitch.

“I thought he had a good outing,” Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman said. “He threw his curve ball for strikes. He’s going to be really tough if he keeps doing that.”

Evans’ home run was one of two hits, and right fielder Ricky Sanchez added two hits as well to raise his average to .348.

But overall, the Terre Haute offense scattered seven singles in with Evans’ solo home run.

Springfield starter Matt Rhodes, a hard-throwing left-hander, got the job done for his first win of the season.

“I think there was not enough good at-bats tonight, I don’t know if it was [Rhodes],” Prettyman said. “I don’t know if we got carried away with trying to hit home runs. I don’t think our at-bats were as good as a team.”

The second consecutive loss comes on the heels of a seven-game winning streak.

“Good teams have long winning streaks and short losing streaks. If we can win seven and lose two, that’s all right. Our focus is to get back to the same approach that got us on that roll. Sometimes the hits don’t fall or you hit it hard right at people,” Prettyman said.

Indiana State right-hander Kurt Kudrecki will take the mound for the Rex tonight at Quincy. The Gems were 6-4 going into Sunday’s late evening game at Danville.
